The Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

The SOL is a really useful tool for giving people who want to migrate to Australia a clear idea of just what skills are in short supply here over the next three to five years. You can check if your skills are needed in Australia by referring to the current list on the department’s website.

What is the SOL and what does it do?

The Skilled Occupation List (SOL) is a list of skilled occupations that deliver high value skills needed by the Australian economy. The SOL only applies to independent, that is non-employer sponsored or State/Territory government nominated skilled migration. It aims to meet medium- to long-term skills needs of high value occupations, rather than immediate short term shortages. This means your occupation must be on the SOL if you are applying for:

• points based skilled migration independently (not nominated by a State or Territory government);

• Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate visa in the graduate work stream); or

• family sponsored stream of the Subclass 489 Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa.

Who updates it, and how?

Every year, the SOL is reviewed and re-examined by the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency (AWPA) and as a result of this review, the SOL is updated on 1 July. When AWPA reviews the SOL, it uses a combination of macro-economic data, labour market data and consultations with relevant industry bodies to identify occupations where independent skilled migration is a sensible approach to help ensure a good match between supply and demand for skills in the medium and longer term. This year’s review included submissions from unions, peak industry associations, industry skills councils and a range of professional associations.
When providing advice as to what occupations should be included on the SOL, AWPA takes into account factors such as an occupation’s skill level, the lead time necessary to develop the required skills, whether the skills are deployed for the use intended and the economic impacts of a skills shortage in particular occupations.
AWPA advised the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship on the 2013 SOL, including some changes, which you can see here

Are there options available if my Nominated Occupation isn’t on the SOL?

If you don’t have an occupation on the SOL, you may be eligible for State and Territory nomination or employer sponsorship. Employers, as well as States and Territory governments, have access to a wider range of occupations on the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). We’ll have a look at the CSOL in my next blog post.

  1. If a candidate get ENS after 2 years of 457 Visa, why does he required relevant original education certificates for Permanent residency?
as on 457 Visa processing, All certificates already has been processed by Embassy, they why do it again required for reprocessing.

In my case, I have all relevant original certificates overseas in native country. unable to get it for a year.

    can you please suggest?

    • Hi Jack

Thanks for your question. If you are applying for ENS through the Temporary Residence Transition stream you are, generally, not required to provide evidence of your skills and qualifications. This is because the Department has already assessed these documents as part of your Subclass 457 visa application and your employer has ‘tested’ your skills during the past two-years that they have employed you.

For more information on what documents are required to be supplied to the Department please refer to this link

I hope this information is of assistance.

  5. Hi,

i need to ask a more query regarding experience points (ANZCO 261313).

i did my Bachelor in Computer Science (3 Years), after bachelor, i got admission in M.Sc CS (2 years) in evening program.
but i stated my full time jobs while my study period of MSc, i got free from MSc in 07/2007. from 2007 my experience is based on 5 Years (10 points), but if i count the experience from my M.Sc CS era, its little mode than 8 years (15 points)
i would like to ask, whether DIAC will count my experience from from my era of Masters or they will count it from 2007 when i finished my Masters (evening program).
some cased i ve seen where ACS count full experience from study periods but DIAC applies different rules.

    kind regards

  14. Hi Z,

    Thank you for your comment.

The occupation ceilings were reset on 1 July 2013. Information on occupation ceilings is available if you go here and click on the reports tab.

    • Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the link you sent me did not provide me an answer to my previous question.

I’m well aware that the occupation ceiling has been reset on the 1st of July, but the occupation ceiling list shown under the “reports” tab shows otherwise. It was last updated on the 24th of June and the new one has not been released.

My question is, does anybody know when it will be updated again to reflect on the changes they have made in this financial year? Will there be any changes to the cap limits for each occupation?

      Best regards,
      Z

    • Hi Z,

The link I gave you is where the information will be posted, when it is available. We will have to wait until this data is published to see if there has been a change.

  15. Hi Damir,

Thank you for your comment. Please note, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship does not get involved in finding a sponsor for potential overseas workers wanting to work in Australia. Information on Employer Sponsored Visas is available here

  18. Hi Nasir,

Thank you for your comment. I believe your question relates to skilled employment on your EOI.
Please note, skilled employment must be in your nominated occupation or a closely related occupation. Under departmental policy, mechanical engineer is not closely related to applications engineer.

  19. Hi Balram,

    Thank you for your comment.

The diplomas you have undertaken may not meet the requirements of a skilled occupation on the SOL. You may wish to check the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) available here

Please note, CSOL is only available for clients who are nominated by a State or Territory government, or employer sponsored. You can find more information here

  20. Hi Chantha,

Thank you for your comment. Graphic Designer is not included on the SOL.

  21. Hi David,

    Thank you for your comment.

The occupation ceilings were reset on 1 July 2013. Information on occupation ceilings is available if you go here and click on the reports tab.

    • Thanks for your reply, Vanessa. But are you sure you gave me the correct link? Did you mean http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/ ?

If you did mean the reports tab on SkillSelect page — the occupation ceiling on this page is out of date. The SOL has already been updated and 5 occupations were removed. However, the removed occupations are still on this page’s occupation ceilings list.

So my guess is the occupation ceiling for this financial year can’t be exactly the same as last year’s. Am I right?

    • Hi David,

Thank you for your comment. The link I gave you is where you will find the new ceilings data, when it is available. Keep checking back.

  22. Hi Kashif,

    Thank you for your comment.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship takes into consideration the opinion provided by the relevant assessing authority for a skilled occupation to be awarded points for skilled employment.

  23. Hi Anwar,

    • Hi Muddsar,

    • Hi Eugene,

Thank you for your comment. You need to have a look at SkillSelect where you will find all the information you need on how to apply to migrate as an Accountant.

  25. Hello,

I have a confusion with respect to the ceilings. Are you going to release a new “occupation ceilings list” for the 2013-2014 period, or the ceilings for each occupation are exactly the same as they were for the 2012-2013 period?

In particular, I have just been confirmed that Engineers Australia have assesed and verified the validity of my degree and work experience and thus I already have 60 points to apply for the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa. My occupational classification is Electronics Engineer ANZSCO 233411, one of the occupations that reached the ceiling some months ago (for the 2012-2013 period). If I understand correctly, right now there are 480 vacancies for Electronics Engineers (the same 480 vacancies that we had in July 2012). So in other words, I can and should send my EOI right now. Is this OK?

    Thank you in advance.

    Best regards,

    Juan

    • Hi Juan,

Thank you for your comment. The new ceilings will be posted under the reports tab here in due course. Keep checking to see the new listings.

  26. Hi there,

My occupation have reached its annual occupational ceiling(2012-2013). In immigration website it shows that it will be reset on July 1st 2013. but when I check the list it is still on its maximum. will that be updated soon for 2013-2014 or there is no more invitation for my occupation for 2013-2014?

I checked in the immigration website on 05-07-2013.
    thanks!

    regards,
    sathish

    • Hi Sathish,

      Thank you for your comment.

The new information on occupation ceilings will be posted under the reports tab here when it is available.

  27. I cannot view the occupational ceiling reset in the reports tab. It reflects the old information of July 2012-2013. Will the number for a specific occupation increased compared to last time.

    • Hi Arun,

      Thank you for your comment.

The reports tab is where the information will be posted when it is available.
